Level 1 Introduce the idea by placing the word cards in a pile and choosing the top card. Start a sentence with this card. Next player chooses another card and starts the sentence with this word and so on until the idea is fully understood or the cards run out. Some children may need extra practice at this level.
Level 2 Start by choosing a list of topics that they might want to write a story about. Here are a few:
Birthday, Christmas, Summer, Holiday, Mystery Cave, Giant Chocolate bar,Fishing.
Place the word cards in a pile as before and play the game trying to keep to the theme of the story.
Level 2a Now play the game but introduce the star cards. The star cards represent adjectives. So if the player uses an adjective in their sentence they earn a star card.
Level 2b Now introduce the exclamation cards. These cards are for repetition. This will help children me more adventurous with their vocabulary and not use ‘very’, ‘extremely’, ‘happy’, ‘sad’ and ‘said’ all the time. One star card can be exchanged for an exclamation card. So effectively they lose a star card for repetition.
Level 3 At this level children should be getting on really well with the idea. Introduce a story plan, choose a topic and ask the children to help you think of some ideas that they want in the story. Create a plan showing clearly the beginning, middle and end. Keep it simple at first with just a few ideas to mention in the story. Play the game and for each idea they mention they get a tick card. Star cards and exclamation cards can still be given out.
The light bulb cards are for coming up with an exceptional idea or sentence and can only be awarded by the teacher.
Level 4 This is the level where the children start writing. Play exactly the same game as in Level 3 but write each sentence on paper taking it in turns. You’ll end up with a story written by 3 or 4 players. Take it in turns to start a new story so each child has a chance to start.
Level 5 Now the children can use the same method to write a story by themselves.
This game will build children’s confidence and help them realise that they can write a story and get their ideas down on paper.
